One of my all time favorite images taken of me. Ellen is not just a photographer, she’s an artist. To me, she’s the Diane Arbus of nude photography.

Level with us.
Recently my good friend and business partner Matthew Holtzclaw wrote such an eloquent blog entry on the topic of stripping, strippers, and the stripping environment. Included are all judgements we face carrying that title, and everything in between. It’s a beautiful retrospect on consideration, respect, and putting you (the public AND co-performers) on our level. Recently I started performing and helping out with details of a show put on by Fleshbot.com called “Fleshbot Fridays”. The venue is Headquarters Gentleman’s club in NYC. A venue type where Burlesque rarely happens these days. We have received some quick negative judgements about performing in a space labeled as a strip club from our Burlesque community, friends, and family. Matthew co-produces the show as well as hosts. Here is what he had to say about this. I full heartedly agree, and couldn’t have put it any better myself. Learn, love, and enjoy.
ON STRIPPING (By Matthew Holtzclaw)
I have been working in more and more burlesque shows in the past few years and I have never been happier. Burlesque performers work harder for less money than almost any other performers I know. They are some of the boldest artists, literally baring themselves to an audience, and every one of them has a point of view and a hunger to express it; and best of all, they have no shame about any of it. I got some grief from certain friends and family that don’t care to understand burlesque that I was working in strip clubs now. I’m not. I work in theaters, bars, and restaurants that choose to house burlesque shows.
Recently, I’ve started hosting a new burlesque show called Fleshbot Friday at Headquarters Gentlemen’s Club. Headquarters is an actual strip club. Now I’m getting serious grief. Not only from friends and family but fellow performers. But here’s the thing: I don’t care about venue. I don’t give a shit about being on Broadway. I’m as happy to do my show in a dank, urine-soaked bar as I would be to do it at Carnegie Hall. I’m not exaggerating. All I care about is an appreciative audience that can hear me and see me. If you can’t wait to be in a particular venue, you and I are different. And I don’t think something is suddenly a work of art if it only lives in a sterile gallery full of quietly nodding intellectuals.
I don’t think I’m any better than a stripper. Maybe I’m deluded but I feel like we are equals. If you need a dressing room to prepare for what you do, we are in the same business. If you sometimes would rather not go out there and slap on a smile and make everyone’s day a little more interesting, we are in the same business. This includes jugglers, singers, porn stars, dancers, musicians, magicians, actors, prostitutes, clowns, trapeze artists, sword swallowers, and, yes, strippers. I feel like most jobs involve being paid to make someone else’s life a little easier. That probably includes a Starbucks barista. And you know what? I don’t feel like I’m any better than her. The only difference with most jobs outside of show business is most performers would still be doing what they are doing even if they weren’t being paid.
So look, come out and see my burlesque show. I’m proud of it. It’s weird and wonderful and yes, it’s in a strip club and it’s hosted by world famous porn star Stoya. And you don’t have to buy a lap dance or a drink or really anything. Admission is free. But if a lady offers such a thing, be nice to her. There’s a good chance she’d rather be home curled up in front of Netflix than on your turgid lap anyway.
